Leftover Oatmeal Never Tasted So Good!

It is obvious there is a recurrent theme with this blog and a whole lot more I can share that I have been holding out on. I just realized that I have been subconsciously focusing on the theme of food and eating, starting with breastfeeding, the first food–if a kid is so lucky! Then, there is the blogpost on the delectable toes of my grandson; and then we are back to breastfeeding again.  I guess I just couldn’t see the forest for the trees, but now it is all clear to me.

It is time to move on to more exciting edible topics that can be enjoyed by others, not just nursing babies. Every day I am discovering, sharing, and sneaking new and healthy foods into the bodies of children (and adults). I have finally decided to reveal these secrets as they show up in my life. No more holding out; no more recipes that I forget to write down because I never measure the ingredients. No more dreams by others for me to write a cookbook. (A cookbook is something I have never had the desire to write!) There are too many secrets that I have developed through the years that I could not even begin to put them into my book, The New Physics of Childhood without turning it into a cookbook, so I settled for the references of other wonderful cooks that have nourishing recipes and I will dedicate this blog to my own spontaneous concoctions which I would rather not call recipes because that is far too formal for what I will be sharing.  I don’t want to intimidate the free flowing process of cooking creativity. I also reserve the right to share the ideas of others as they come to me with full credit to the clever cook, whomever they may be, though I will probably not be sharing their recipes either, just the basic ideas and links if there are any.

Because this is NOT a book I will NOT promise to be accurate, but I will promise that what I do share will be nourishing and clever and creative and sneaky and tasty and even pretty darn easy! I can’t stand doing anything that takes more time than it has to, with the exception of heating up children’s food in a hot water bath instead of a microwave oven, thought this actually only takes about 2-3 minutes longer in most cases, so I don’t see the problem there. Children need to learn to wait a little bit longer for things these days anyway. I also can’t stand cooking anything that has to be measured, involves waste, includes unnecessary spending or unnecessary dirty dishes.

Sneaking extra nourishment into everything I cook has gone on for most of my life; it has become a second nature that I cannot separate from cooking itself.

It all started with my mother, actually I thought it started with my father, but I realized that before my mother died when I was 12, she had already introduced me to the book by Adelle Davis, “Let’s Have Healthy Children“. When I was married and then responsible for cooking for a family of my own, I immediately purchased a copy and memorized the food charts and ingredients for the next several years. This became my formative training in fortifying the foods I prepared for my children. That was  35 years ago and I have been studying, learning, and experimenting ever since.

This is a casual format so I can make sure to get the ideas down without procrastinating for the perfect time to make it “look pretty”.

Basic and simple!

I always figured there are so many great cooks and chefs and foodies out there that have enough bright ideas, but perhaps there are a few that you may find useful in this blog.

My first tried and true idea is this:

Putting leftover cooked oatmeal in pancake batter (add a little more baking soda and baking powder to compensate for the heaviness). Add about 1 cup oatmeal to a batter that will feed a family of 4. You will have moist pancakes filled with fiber and protein that also make easy take along snacks for kids that you can feel good about.

bowl of oatmeal

The REAL Breakfast of Champions

If I don’t have leftover oatmeal, I just start the batter in a bowl by adding dried oatmeal and a little hot water to soak up for a few minutes before I add the other ingredients. This fortifies a pancake batter, especially one with white flour. For those who squirm at the thought of healthy pancakes, they can’t even tell because oatmeal is basically white. For people with constipation problems, this takes the antagonist out of the pancake and makes it friendly and even helpful in the process, especially if you add the flax seeds too (whole are preferred-just a couple of tablespoons).

My best taste test for this idea was a holiday gathering of my husband’s relatives from Mexico. I made a huge restaurant tray filled with these pancakes made with

pancakes

Pancakes Don't Have to Hurt

leftover oatmeal that also had whole flax seed added. I kept them in the oven to stay warm, covered with tin foil. After the main meal was over, two-by-two, the kids and teenagers kept sneaking into the kitchen to get a few more because they didn’t dry out like other pancakes do. Pretty soon the tray was empty. I was happy because I knew these kids had more than just simple carbs but hearty ones filled with much more than calories. I never heard a word or complaint about the flax seeds either.

Another nice thing about these tips and most all of the others I will share is that they are fairly inexpensive, which has always been a priority for me, even if I am cooking for a wealthy family. Oats and flax seeds, when bought at a normal location other than Whole Foods Market, are extremely inexpensive and amazingly fortifying foods

flax seeds

Amazing & Inexpensive Flax Seeds

that you can sneak into most anything! (more recipes on those later)

And, what is healthy and tasty and inexpensive for children is healthy and tasty and inexpensive for everyone else as well.

The saying “those who laugh last laugh loudest” really applies to oatmeal today. For years, people have thought I was nuts for only eating oatmeal every morning for breakfast (most days at least). Protein crazy-carb-fearing fanatics had no respect for the perfection of oatmeal until today with the endorsements of celebrities like Madonna and Arnold Schwarznegger, which means that they may actually embrace this idea and let themselves enjoy a bowl of oatmeal and even a pancake now and then!

I hope you enjoy the new format of this blog and feel free to add your own creative, nutritious concoctions to the comments section too. P.S. Forgive my redundancies, because again, this is NOT a book!

You know what I say, “There is never a bad time for good information.”

Happy Trails,

Granny Pants

Madonna - Like A Prayer (review)

Madonna isn't afraid to bear all as she unleashes her divinely ordained navel (or something else..?) on the world.

The mid-eighties witnessed the lapse of Madonna into a chasm of manufactured tedium. The grossly uninspiring Like A Virgin album, followed by the commendable but not exactly mind-melting True Blue were indicators of a seemingly vapid woman, devoid of any creative talents. The mistress of marketing prioritized image over substance, tacky personas over emotional honesty. Her career was beginning to look deciduous.

Like A Prayer was a crucial change in direction for Madonna, and her first and finest attempt at establishing herself artistically. Madge has cast off her old skin of shallow deceit in favour of outright honesty and self-exploration, taking no punches either lyrically or musically. She is explicit about the painful disintegration of her marriage (“Till Death Do Us Part”), her rather complex family values (“Oh Father”, ”Keep It Together”) and even her feelings of grief about her mother, who died of cancer (“Promise to Try”). It’s touching and powerful stuff.

The production values (each track is co-produced by Madonna herself) are as intricate and finely crafted as the poignant lyrics. The title track, ”Like A Prayer”, is layered with base-heavy guitar riffs and Patrick Leonard’s typical resonant pop-beats, backed vocally by a divine and benevolent sounding black gospel choir. The song borders somewhere between the spiritual and profane, but the subversive innuendo is just an extra cookie in the jar this time round. It is essentially a woman questioning the value of religion and commonly accepted beliefs. The quality of Madonna’s surprisingly brilliant songcraft continues through the entire album (alas, not her career).

”Oh Father”, a ballad teeming with emotion, dissects Madonna’s ambivalent feelings towards her hit-and-miss father. The somber lyrics dangle on depressing. “You can’t hurt me now/I got away from you, I never thought I would.” Nevertheless, she uses the bad love as an opportunity for self-empowerment, a behaviour she replicates in “Promise to Try”, where a heartbroken girl promises her dying mother that she try to do her best in life. Madonna ultimately chooses strength over sorrow.

”Pray For Spanish Eyes” bravely tackles the fear surrounding the AIDS epidemic of the late eighties, and laments the death of her gay friend who died of said disease. It’s a beautiful melody laced with melancholy and outrage. Madonna sounds as if she’s about to burst into tears. It’s definitely a rare aberration in her lengthy career.

It may sound a tad personal, but the work is arranged in a way that makes the hardships as universal as humanly possible. And it’s certainly not all gloom and doom; ”Cherish” is as sunny as it is sonorous, with its hit-making feel-good lyrics and triumphant beats. The strong and sexy ”Express Yourself” helps provide some relief from the turmoil, too, creating a fine balance that refrains from emotional discrimination.

The album closes with ”Act of Contrition”, aptly produced by ‘The powers that Be’. From beginning to end, Like A Prayer is kind to the ears and cruel to the heart cockles, as spiritual as it is sensual. This is, without a question, her best and most consistent album.

Christmas in My Heart

Yaay, vine Craciunul! It pretty much sucks.

1.Se va reintoarce in top anul urmator. “All I Want for Christmas is You”  de Mooriah Carey a fost lansat in 1994 si a fost un hit de top 5 peste tot in lume. Odata cu introducerea descarcarilor digitale in determinarea popularitatii cantecelor prin 2007,  piesa s-a intors in clasamente precum cel britanic, irlandez, german si chiar japonez in fiecare an, inclusiv anul acesta.

2.Primeste airplay.

3.Pop culture. The Ronettes in filmul “The Holiday”.

  1. Eartha Kitt (1953), Madonna (1987), Kylie Minogue (2000) – Santa Baby
  2. John Lennon (1971/1972) – Happy Xmas (War is Over)
  3. Abba (1980) – Happy New Year
  4. Lady GaGa (2008) – Christmas Tree
  5. Mariah Carey (1994) – All I Want for Christmas is You
  6. Boney M (1979) – Hooray! Hooray! It’s a Holi-Holiday!
  7. Bing Crosby (1942) – White Christmas
  8. Dean Martin (1959) – Let It Snow
  9. Gabriella Cilmi (2008) – Warm this Winter
  10. The Ronettes (1963) – Sleigh Ride
  11. Sugababes (2000) – New Year
  12. Band Aid (1984) – Do They Know It’s Christmas Time
  13. Celine Dion (2000) – Don’t Save it All for Christmas Day
  14. Sarah Brightman (2008) – I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday
  15. Andre (1999) – Noapte de vis
  16. Sarah Connor (2005) – Christmas in My Heart
  17. Destiny’s Child (2001) – 8 Days of Christmas
  18. Nicola (2003) – Iarna (Milioane)
  19. Wham! (1984) – Last Christmas
  20. ‘N Sync (1998) – Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays

"Yulesville" - Warner Bros [X-mas Audio #4 / Album As Art #22]

Why were the ’80s such a confusing time for so many … artists? The rich musicians offering awkward “Merry Christmas” greetings on Yulesville sound like they stumbled out of a million-dollar coke party just in time to be corralled into a studio space to record these horrible spots.

And why sequence four audio X-mas greetings in a row? The tendency would be to stagger the playlist a bit so the listener doesn’t go absolute banana fuck-nuts by the time the records over; seems at Warner Bros they never learned this skill.

These curiosities aside, Yulesville is a fascinating compilation that serves as a glimpse into another dimension, where Madonna suddenly cares about whether you drive drunk and George Harrison is roused from a nap in order to read a cue card for a few seconds.

When you finally do get to the music, it’s pretty good. 54.40 will get your balls jingling like sleigh bells with its corn-doggin’ synths and even-higher-corn-content synth-drums, Aztec Camera offer up a cool guitar jam-off, Julie Brown’s rant … well, that doesn’t jingle a goddamn thing and it’s unfunny to boot. I think she invented the unnecessary “like” in conversation too, so, you know, she should be gassed for that (I think she invented the unnecessary “you know,” too; godDAMN).

Book Of Love’s “We Three Kings” keeps the queersville theme going with a seemingly serious and seriously flawed take on “We Three Kings”; thank god Joey Ramone and his Ramones are here to save the day with “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight),” far from “53rd & 3rd” but still better than most of the pap on this christcomp. I just have to wonder: What happened to the fuzzy, snarly crunch of their guitars in the ’80s?

If you were old enough in the ’80s, you were probably wondering what happened to Brian Wilson, too. He’s on here, but only as a quick, record-it-and-get-out audio snippet, promising that “You’ll be hearing from me in 1988.” How comforting! Then, just as you’re starting to assume this will be a bunk stocking stuffer, The Pretenders do what they did in the mid-to-late ’80s: Kick everyone else’s ass. “2000 Miles” (no comma) does just that (check out the video above!).

Side B is an even bigger mess than Side A, full of artists that never were, never could be or never should have been considered. Here’s a quick round-up:

  •  Weirdos I’ve never heard of like The Winans (a bad combo of Michael McDonald and Michael Bolton), Siedah Garrett, Force M.D.’s and Sherrick offer limp-dick holiday cheer;
  • Prince offers a “Purple Rain”-esque cut that really, really cooks; no smart-ass comment here … he’s … he’s the king …
  • Bee Gees talk for 11 seconds, then leave;
  • With Body Count still just a gleam their collective eye, Ice-T and Evil-E embarrass the SHIT out of themselves;
  • The New Monkees — there was a New Monkees? HOLY GOD — stink things up; this idea should have never left the office building it was cooked up in;
  • Fleetwood Mac, Randy Travis and Los Lobos? Ok, time to end this while I’ve still got dignity …

And there you have it: Way too much confusion on nice, red vinyl. At least they had artistic sense in the ’80s!

Wicked Tony Award winner Idina Menzel will fly into the Golden Globe-nominated series “Glee,” the Associated Press reports.

Menzel will appear in the new episodes of “Glee,” which are set to begin airing in April 2010. “OK, listen. We had Kristin [Chenoweth] now Idina’s coming,” cast member Chris Colfer told the AP. “I can’t even fathom that. I can’t even talk about it. I am so, so excited.”

As previously reported, Menzel has been in talks to portray the coach of McKinley High’s rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline. The Wicked and Rent star will likely appear in all nine of the upcoming episodes. Tony Award nominee Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening) has also been confirmed to portray the lead member of Vocal Adrenaline in the 2010 episodes of “Glee.”

Balada Mixta - Menino Jesus Edition - 17/12

Anna & Madonna come out to support fashion's hottest man (and his film)

“I’ve always thought of myself as a commercial fashion designer,” Tom Ford said. “This is the first thing I’ve ever done in my life that was a pure artistic expression.” He was referring, of course, to his debut film, A Single Man, which had its New York premiere on Sunday night. As with everything else the designer touches, the project has been earning raves. “The more I’ve gotten to know Tom, the more I appreciate him,” said his leading lady, Julianne Moore, who originally met Ford in 1998 when he was designing her a dress for the Academy Awards (shockingly, she went with another option that night). “He’s someone to whom the important things matter,” Moore added, and we presume she didn’t mean his oft-stated penchant for going commando.

Rounding out the cast of the movie, an adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s 1964 novel about a single day in the life of a bereaved professor, are Colin Firth (who nabbed the Best Actor trophy in Venice for the role) and Nicholas Hoult. Most familiar to Americans as the boy in About a Boy, Hoult is all grown up now. “He’s six-four!” Ford laughed. “We recently did a photo shoot together and I made them bring me two boxes to stand on so I wouldn’t look like such a munchkin!”

But it was a giant’s welcome, not a munchkin’s, he got at the after-party at Monkey Bar. While Jon Kortajarena received compliments from Kevin Bacon for his cameo (“my first film,” the Spanish model said), Ford was toasted by Ellen Barkin, Courtney Love, Rachel Roy, Mario Testino, and his distributor, Harvey Weinstein. He then retreated to a back table with Madonna and—we couldn’t help but notice—Bravo’s Andy Cohen. First fashion, then fragrance, then film; could reality TV be next?

Leave Tiger Alone!

Why can’t we leave Tiger alone. This country is so uptight about marital affairs. If I was wifey, I would be more humiliated from all the apologizing and all the “graceful wife” bullshit than from the actual affairs.

On his website he writes, “Elin has always done more to support our family and shown more grace than anyone could possibly expect.”

Tiger strikes me as an upstanding citizen that would never bend his wife over or pull her hair. This isn’t because he’s not into bending women over and pulling their hair. He is. We all are. He wouldn’t do this to graceful wifey because she’s his wife. His Madonna. He/she or both have elevated wifey to levels of untouchable prestige.

Men like the Tiger, (power, money, fame, good looks) have a “Madonna” and a “whore” in there life. In some rare cases they can be the same woman. But most men can’t treat their “Madonna” like they treat their “whore”. They’re socialized that a whore can’t be a Madonna and a Madonna can’t be a whore.

My suggestion to wifey, tell the Tiger to fuck you like the whore you are. It might help. He can spoon you afterwards.

Do you think Elin should treat the Tiger like a whore. Maybe I have the dynamics all wrong. Is it the Tiger that wants to be bent over?

Let’s agree, that whatever should happen, we should LEAVE TIGER ALONE!

In memory, I present “Leave Brittany Alone!”
